The type of electric fencing you will need has a lot to do with the type of animal you are containing and the type of predators you have in the area. You may wish to install an electric fence with polyrope, a paddock fence, a farm fence, electric horse fencing or even small electric netting, but you are not sure what you need.

To ensure you purchase the proper electric fence energisers and electric fencing supplies you need to know what is recommended for containing each animal.

To protect your pond you should use two strands of polytwine or electric netting, which will aid in keeping herons away from your pond. The best placing is about 12 to 18 inches from the edge of the water and around 50cm high. Herons prefer to land away from the water and then walk up to the edge instead of landing in the water.

If you have dogs and want to contain them in your yard while protecting visitors from larger dogs you should use a few lines of electric tape. If you have small dogs electric netting does quite well. The only thing you need to watch is high your dog can jump. You want to ensure the electric fence is tall enough the dog cannot jump over.

If you are trying to keep your own cat in the yard or keep stray cats out, the best electric fencing supplies to use is electric green netting. This will blend very well with the surroundings while keeping your cat in his or her yard instead of straying. Keeping rabbits out of garden can be a huge problem as they love destroying vegetable gardens and eating everything in sight. Electric netting the same used for cats will work great. If you own rabbits, the same netting will keep your rabbits in a specific area.

Pigs are possibly the easiest animals to contain with electric fencing, as they do not have as much to insulate them. Three lines of wire or twine will work great for strip grazing and for piglet's electric netting such as used for rabbits or cats works terrific.

Poultry of course is another animal that does better with electric netting. Not only will your chickens, peacocks or other fowl stay in their designated area but also the predators such as fox and badgers will not be able to raid the chicken coop.

Horses need a different type of electric fencing than other livestock. Horses move very fast when they are out running and enjoying the field. Due to this fact, they need 2 to 3 lines polytape or polyrope that is very visible.  The top line is recommended to stand 1m high for ponies and 1.2cm for horses.

Sheep and goats are on the stubborn side and even using three lines of polyrope, polytape or wire may not be enough. Netting may be the answer especially for horned sheep.

Cattle do well with two lines of polyrope, polytape, or twine at about 120cm high.

No matter what type of electric fence supplies you need you will be able to find everything you need at a local electric fence supplier in the UK.
