Some ancient jewellery beads were discovered in 2006. The first piece of jewellery that a man wore around his neck was a bead. It was the creation of one of the world’s first necklace. The beads were made from sea shells and some holes were put in these. They date back to 25,000 years. Some sites in Algeria have also discovered beads.

Besides the basic needs of food and shelter, it seems the need to look better, to adorn something or the other is also very natural to man. This is borne by the fact that in tribal communities too one finds ornaments in use. These communities have not changed with the times and are living in the way they have been living since ever. Therefore use of ornaments has been the way of old primitive people and continues to be in practice by members of the tribes. These ornaments are far from being sophisticated, nevertheless tribal people find them worth adorning.

While the discovery made in 2006 dates back to 25000 years, the one earlier found in Africa is estimated to be about 30000 years old. In what is perhaps the oldest jewellery of the world, it consists of 41 shells used as jewellery wears. Before man could find silver and gold, he used many other things as jewellery. Here the word jewellery means anything used for ornamental purposes. Going by this logic, flowers used by women eons ago might have been the first jewellery.

A gold jewellery set was found on the coast of Bulgaria. Not only this, dozens of tiny and meager jewellery pieces were found in a woman’s grave. The tombs even had some jewellery items. The gold and silver pottery and jewellery has also been found from most of the excavations of primitive man’s living sites.

The shell was most commonly available. A lot of excavations show some shell jewellery also. Chinese shell and pearls come in many colours like white, peach, light yellow and pink also. The most decent and royal colour of pearl and shell is glittering white. The pearl bracelets and ear rings are very famous.

Use of shells goes back to ancient Greeks and Egyptians. The stone and shell jewellery was very much in vogue during those periods. Besides shells and stones, there were bones of animals which were designed in such a way that the women and even men use them.

Even professional women, who like to keep themselves away from jewellery, like to wear a small string of pearls around their necks. Check out BBC newscasters. Often you would find them wearing a small pearl string with small ear rings. Use of pearls increased during the rule of Queen Alexandra as fine sea pearls were an integral part of her dress.

The oldest ear rings found date back to 2500 BC. Ear rings are still popular today. Even women, who don’t like wearing heavy jewellery, wear small ear rings. The ancient women liked to show their wealth status by wearing these ear rings.
